Mirrors have fascinated us for all of history. There is something mystical about mirrors that has bred countless superstitions and spooky tales. If you’re the type to err on the side of caution when it comes to following superstitions to avoid bad luck, we’ve got the main mirror superstitions you need to know about to avoid bad luck.

What to do if you break a mirror

If you break a mirror, do you have 7 years’ bad luck coming your way? The Ancient Romans believed so – and it’s thought that the ‘seven years’ comes from the amount of time it takes for the soul to regenerate. When a mirror breaks, it;s thought the soul breaks with it, bringing bad luck until it regenerates in 7 years. Allegedly, you can prevent 7 years’ bad luck after breaking a mirror by leaving the broken pieces alone for 2 hours, then taking every last piece and burying it deep underground in the moonlight.

Mirrors and the deceased

It’s long been thought that mirrors are the windows to another universe, with the power to trap the souls of the departed forever within. It’s thought that if the soul encounters a mirror before its body has been buried, it will become trapped in the mirror. If you’re unfortunate to know someone that’s recently passed, cover the mirrors in your house until the burial or cremation.

How to hang mirrors for Feng Shui

Feng Shui is the traditional Chinese art of laying out homes to optimise the natural flow of energy. There are many principles to follow, but one of the most well-known Feng Shui ‘rules’ are those surrounding mirrors and how to place them correctly.

According to Feng Shui, the positioning of mirrors is vital for the correct flow of positive energy in your home and to reflect the things we want. In Feng Shui, reflections are vitally important – we should reflect what we want more of.

  • Mirrors should not be placed opposite your bed, or reflect a bed in any way.
  • Mirrors should be placed in a dining room, a room associated with wealth.
  • Avoid mirrors in the kitchen as reflections of stoves are believed to host negative energy.
